**In short:** Check the water tank is full and pushed fully into place, as its valve only opens when seated. Then clear any air lock by running the hot water function until water flows steadily. If water still will not come through, descale the machine and clean the shower screen. A fault in the solenoid valve or pump is possible but less common and needs a repair.

When the pump runs but nothing comes out of the group head, or there is no hot water or steam from the wand, the cause is usually simple. The Sage Barista Express draws water from a removable tank through a valve and a pump, heats it in a thermocoil and sends it to the group head or wand. A gap anywhere in that path stops the flow. Start with the tank and work forward. Steps vary a little between versions, so keep your Sage manual to hand.

## Check the water tank first

The tank sits on a spring valve at the back. If it is not pressed fully down, the valve stays closed and the pump runs dry. Lift the tank out, check the valve underneath moves freely and is not blocked with scale, refill with fresh cold water and push it firmly back into place.

If you use a water filter in the tank, make sure it is fitted correctly and has been soaked as the instructions say. A dry or badly seated filter can trap air. Try a run without the filter to rule it out. See [the Sage Barista Express water filter](https://beanandcrema.co.uk/blog/sage-barista-express-water-filter) for fitting and replacement.

## Clear an air lock with a priming routine

Running the tank empty, or a long time without use, can leave air in the pump and pipes. The pump then hums but cannot push water. Priming means getting water flowing through again. The exact method depends on your version, so check the manual, but a common routine is below.

1. Fill the tank and seat it firmly.
2. Put a jug under the steam wand and select hot water with the dial.
3. Let it run until water flows steadily, then stop.
4. Remove the portafilter and run water through the empty group head for a few seconds.
5. Repeat two or three times if flow is weak at first.
6. Switch the machine off and on again if the lights are flashing, then retest.

Note: The steam wand and hot water outlet can spit and scald. Keep hands clear and point the wand into a jug or drip tray.

## Scale and a blocked shower screen

In hard water areas limescale builds up in the thermocoil, valves and pipes, and can slow or stop flow altogether. If flow has been getting weaker over weeks before stopping, scale is likely. Run a full descale with Sage's descaler or another descaler the manual approves, following [how to descale the Sage Barista Express](https://beanandcrema.co.uk/blog/how-to-descale-sage-barista-express).

If water reaches the group head but only trickles, check the shower screen. Coffee oils and fines can clog it. Brush it with the group head brush, run a cleaning cycle with a cleaning tablet, and if the manual allows it, remove the screen with the correct tool and soak it. Our guide to [hard water and coffee machines](https://beanandcrema.co.uk/blog/hard-water-and-coffee-machines) explains how to set the hardness level so descale reminders arrive at the right time.

## No steam or hot water only

If the group head works but the wand gives no steam or hot water, the wand tip may be blocked with dried milk. Unscrew the tip if possible, clear the holes with the pin tool supplied, and soak it in warm water. Always wipe and purge the wand after steaming to stop this happening again.

If neither steam nor hot water appears and the tip is clear, a valve inside may be stuck, or the machine may be in a fault state. Turn it off for a few minutes and try again.

## Signs of a solenoid or pump fault

The solenoid valve directs water between the group head, wand and drip tray. Owners sometimes suspect it when water goes to the wrong place, the drip tray fills during a shot, or the group head gives nothing even with a full tank and a primed pump. A pump that has failed may be silent or make an unusually loud rattle with no flow.

These parts are inside the machine with mains wiring, so they are not for home repair. Contact Sage support or an authorised repairer. | What you see | Most likely cause |
| --- | --- |
| Pump hums, no water anywhere | Tank not seated or air lock |
| Flow fading over weeks | Limescale |
| Trickle from group head only | Clogged shower screen |
| No steam, group head fine | Blocked wand tip |
| Water goes to drip tray mid shot | Possible solenoid fault |

## Frequently asked questions

**Why is my Sage Barista Express pump running but no water?** Most often the tank is not fully seated or there is an air lock. Reseat the tank, then run hot water through the wand until it flows.

**How do I prime a Sage Barista Express?** Fill and seat the tank, select hot water with a jug under the wand and run until flow is steady, then run water through the empty group head. Your manual gives the steps for your version.

**Can descaling fix no water?** Yes, if scale has blocked the path. Weak flow that gets gradually worse is the main sign.

**Is the solenoid valve likely to be the problem?** It is less common than air locks or scale. Consider it only after the simpler checks, and have it looked at by a repairer.
