The Melitta SOLO (E950-222, Pure Black) is for someone who drinks black coffee, wants beans ground fresh and has very little worktop space. At 20 cm wide, it is one of the narrowest bean-to-cup machines available, and it still offers a double spout for two cups, a cup warming area and an automatic cleaning function.

Our take
Spout, crema and intensity
The double spout adjusts up to 13.5 cm and can dispense one or two cups at the same time. You choose coffee intensity and set a favourite, and Melitta says the Aroma-Extraction-System gives more flavour. The crema can be thick and even or a fine bubbled layer, according to the listing.
Being able to set and save an intensity is handy for a household that drinks the same coffee every day, because the machine becomes a one-button routine.
Water and cleaning
The removable water tank holds 1.2 litres. A filter cartridge provides filtered water, and four water hardness levels can be programmed. Automatic cleaning runs at the push of a button. The water heater is stainless steel with an aluminium cover.
The drip tray cover is removable, with holes to help position cups.
Energy and support
You can programme the machine to switch itself off anywhere between one and eight hours after last use, and a separate off switch cuts power completely. The Companion App provides tips, tricks and service features.
