The Sage Oracle is for the serious home espresso drinker who wants commercial-style hardware with automation where it helps. Its core is a dual boiler construction, giving separate control of brewing and steaming so you can extract and steam at the same time, plus a one-touch americano that adds hot water through a dedicated spout.

Our take

Dual boilers and PID

Dual stainless steel boilers and a heated group head are controlled by PID digital temperature control, delivering water at precisely the right temperature, according to Sage. An Over Pressure Valve limits the maximum pump pressure during extraction to help prevent bitter flavours, and low pressure pre-infusion gently expands the grinds first.

Automatic grind, dose and tamp

The integrated precision conical burr grinder automatically grinds, doses and tamps 22 g of coffee. Grind control is adjustable. The bean hopper holds 280 g. Shot control is via an LCD display with one shot, two shots or manual control.

Automating the puck preparation keeps shots consistent from one person to the next, which suits a household where several people use the machine.

Milk and the americano

A self-cleaning steam wand powered by its own boiler textures milk automatically, with programmable temperature and texture. Because steaming has its own boiler, milk can be prepared while the espresso is brewing.

The one-touch americano brews a double espresso then adds hot water through a separate spout, as on a commercial machine. Long black and hot water are also available.

Capacity, power and weight

The water tank holds 2.5 litres. Power is 2400 watts and the machine weighs 19.2 kg, so it needs a sturdy, permanent spot. The dimensions shown on Amazon are not for the machine itself. Sage offers a 2 year repair, replace or refund guarantee.

Such a heavy machine also needs good access around it: plan for space to slide out the water tank and empty the drip tray without lifting the whole unit.

Against the Oracle Touch and Oracle Jet

The Sage Oracle Touch adds a touch screen and also has a dedicated steam boiler and automated puck preparation. The Sage Oracle Jet uses ThermoJet heating with Auto Queue and a 58 mm portafilter. The Oracle stands out for dual boilers, a heated group head and the dedicated americano spout.

Verdict

Buy the Sage Oracle if you want dual boilers, automated grinding and tamping, and one-touch americanos with simultaneous steaming. If you prefer a touch screen menu, the Sage Oracle Touch is the alternative, and if a lighter machine with Auto Queue suits you better, look at the Sage Oracle Jet.
