Our take

Grinder and dose on demand

The 30 settings give more room than the 16 on the classic Barista Express and 25 on the Express Impress. The grinder delivers coffee on demand into the portafilter. Tamping is manual, using the included tools, so you will need to learn to tamp evenly.

Thirty steps also leave space for lighter roasts, which often need a finer grind than the darker blends most supermarket beans are roasted to.

Extraction and display

Low pressure pre-infusion is followed by high pressure extraction at 9 bar, from a 15 bar Italian pump. The display shows the information you need for a shot, and you can choose one or two shot options or switch to manual control. Volumetric control means the machine stops at a set volume.

The 3 second heat-up is the real day-to-day advantage: you can switch on, grind and tamp, and the machine is ready before you lock in the portafilter.

Milk and what is in the box

The listing does not describe the steam wand in detail, but a 480 ml milk jug is included, suggesting manual milk texturing. Also in the box are single and double wall filter baskets, a shaving tool, a cleaning kit and a Claro Swiss water filter.

Sage notes two bags of speciality coffee are offered when you register any Sage espresso or coffee machine.

Size and specs

The machine is 41 cm deep, 41 cm wide and 44 cm high, weighs 12.5 kg and draws 1680 watts. The water tank holds 2 litres. Sage gives a 2 year warranty.

Against the Barista Express and Express Impress

The Sage Barista Express is the classic with 16 settings and manual tamping, while the Express Impress adds intelligent dosing and assisted tamping with 25 settings. The Barista Pro trades assistance for speed and finer grind control.

Verdict

Buy the Sage Barista Pro if you want manual espresso with a fast heat-up and fine grind control, and you are happy to tamp and steam yourself. If you want help with dosing and tamping, the Sage Barista Express Impress is the better choice, and if you want to start with the classic at a simpler level, the Sage Barista Express is the alternative.
