The Philips 2200 (EP2220/10) is about as simple as a bean-to-cup machine gets, and that is its appeal. It is for someone who mainly wants freshly ground espresso or a long coffee at a touch, plus the option of frothing milk by hand now and then. What sets it apart is the classic milk frother, which Philips says has only two parts and both go in the dishwasher.

Our take

Two drinks, four adjustments

The title promises two one-touch drinks, which in practice means espresso and coffee. Within that short menu, Philips lets you adjust grind size, coffee strength, quantity and temperature, so there is more control than the button count suggests. The listing does not give the number of grind steps.

Selection uses a touch panel. There is no milk button: cappuccinos and lattes are made by frothing milk with the wand and adding it to an espresso.

The classic frother in daily use

A classic frother injects steam and air into a jug of milk you hold beneath it. It takes a little practice to get the texture right, but there is no carafe or tube to deep clean, and the two removable parts can go straight into the dishwasher. For someone who makes one cappuccino at the weekend, that is far less maintenance than an automatic milk system that needs regular attention.

Philips describes the result as smooth, velvety foam suitable for cappuccinos and lattes.

Filters, bean capacity and what is missing

Philips recommends its AquaClean filter to reduce limescale and cut the frequency of descaling, but notes it is not included in the delivery, so budget for one if you live in a hard water area.

The listing gives a 275 g figure that most likely refers to the bean hopper, a weight of 7.5 kg and 1500 watt power. It does not state the water tank capacity, and the dimensions shown on Amazon are clearly those of a packaging part rather than the machine. Check Philips' own figures for size before ordering.

Compared with Philips 3300 and Magnifica S

The Philips 3300 classic frother version adds iced coffee and three more drinks with SilentBrew, in a similar body. The De'Longhi Magnifica S also uses a manual frother but brings a stated 13 setting grinder and can make two cups at once. The 2200 is the most stripped-back of the three.

Verdict

Buy the Philips 2200 if you drink espresso or long black coffee most days and want occasional hand-frothed milk with very little cleaning. If you want iced coffee and a quieter machine, the Philips 3300 classic frother model is the better buy, and if two cups at once matter, go for the De'Longhi Magnifica S.
