Our take

The Impress puck system

Sage describes intelligent dosing that adjusts the amount of coffee and assisted tamping that applies consistent pressure. The result is a cleaner, more guided workflow than on the classic Barista Express, which relies on manual tamping. It does not remove the skill entirely, but it makes the common errors less likely.

For someone moving from pods or a bean-to-cup machine, this is a gentle way into portafilter espresso: the machine handles the measurements, and you still get to grind, brew and steam yourself.

Grinder and extraction

The integrated conical burr grinder has 25 settings and grinds directly into the portafilter. PID temperature control and low pressure pre-infusion are included for a balanced extraction. The listing quotes a 10 bar output pressure and 1850 watts of power.

Manual milk texturing

Milk is textured with a manual steam wand, so you will learn to make microfoam yourself. A Temp Control Milk Jug is included to help judge temperature. That is more involved than the automatic wands on the Bambino Plus or Barista Touch Impress, but many people enjoy learning it.

Size and specs

The machine is 33 cm deep, 38 cm wide and 41 cm high and weighs 13.5 kg, so it needs some counter space. The listing gives a capacity of 480 ml, which is unlikely to be the water tank on a machine of this type and may refer to the milk jug. The water tank size is not stated clearly.

Against the Barista Pro and La Specialista Arte

The Sage Barista Pro has 30 settings and a 3 second ThermoJet heat-up, but manual tamping. The De'Longhi La Specialista Arte uses a smart tamping lever and sensor grinder with a 2 litre tank. The Express Impress offers the most guidance on dosing of the three.

Against the Sage Bambino Plus, which has no grinder at all, the Express Impress saves buying a separate grinder but takes up far more space.

Verdict

Buy the Sage Barista Express Impress if you want a built-in grinder and guidance on dose and tamp while you learn to steam milk by hand. If faster heat-up and more grind settings matter, the Sage Barista Pro is the step across, and if you want a large tank with lever tamping, the De'Longhi La Specialista Arte is worth comparing.
