Our take
Thirty steps, by design
Baratza positions the Sette 30 as straightforward: you pick a numbered step and come back to it. That suits people who use one or two favourite beans and do not want to fiddle. The trade-off against the Sette 270 is resolution, because there is no stepless micro ring between steps. With some beans, the ideal grind may fall between two settings, and you would then adjust dose or recipe instead.
The burrs are threaded 40 mm conical burrs.
Timed dosing and workflow
Dosing is timed to the tenth of a second. Once set, a press of the button delivers a consistent amount of ground coffee as long as the beans and grind setting stay the same. As with any timer, a change in beans or roast level will shift the weight produced, so a quick check on scales is still sensible.
Low retention and speed
Like the Sette 270, the Sette 30 uses a direct-through path with a high-torque DC motor. Baratza says this gives rapid grinding, low static and minimal waste. Low retention helps keep each shot fresh, because little stale coffee from the previous session sits in the chute.
Power is 200 watts, and the grinder weighs 2.35 kg.
Capacity, and a figure to check
The bullet points list a 300 g hopper and a 120 g grounds bin. The spec table, however, gives a capacity of 180 g. The hopper figure in the bullets is the one shared with the Sette 270, so check with Baratza if hopper size is critical to you. Dimensions are not given in the listing.
Against the Sette 270 and Encore ESP
The Baratza Sette 270 adds the stepless micro ring for finer control at a higher level. The Baratza Encore ESP has a dedicated espresso range in settings 1 to 20 and a coarse range for filter, but no timer. The Sette 30 sits in between: timed dosing without micro adjustment.
Verdict
Buy the Baratza Sette 30 if you want repeatable espresso doses with simple, numbered settings and do not need micro adjustment. If you change beans often and want finer control, the Baratza Sette 270 is worth the step up, while the Encore ESP is better if you also grind for filter.
