The HiBREW G5 is for someone who single doses beans and wants a compact, metal-bodied grinder that can switch grinding speed. What sets it apart is the choice of a fast speed of 500 rpm or a slower 400 rpm, which HiBREW says reduces heat during grinding to better preserve the flavour of the beans.

Our take

Burr and settings

The G5 uses a 48 mm conical CNC grinding disc with high hardness. HiBREW lists 36 continuously adjustable grind settings, covering espresso, Turkish coffee, pour over, moka pot and drip coffee. That is a broad range for a compact single dose grinder.

Two speeds

The fast setting gets the job done quickly. The slow setting trades a little time for less heat. Whether the difference is noticeable in the cup will depend on the beans and your brewing method, but having the choice is unusual at this level.

For lighter roasts used in pour over, some brewers prefer slower grinding, while those making espresso in a hurry will likely leave it on the faster speed. Either way, the listing does not say how speed is selected beyond the two figures.

Retention and static

A powder discharger and anti-static coating are designed to reduce grounds building up inside the grinder, which cuts waste and keeps doses fresher. The housing tilts at 15 degrees, which HiBREW says makes it easier to empty the ground coffee.

Size, build and capacity

The body is aluminium alloy with a textured, non-slip surface. Dimensions are given as 10.5 cm wide, 19 cm deep and 31 cm high, and the grinder weighs 2.96 kg. The bean container holds 50 g, enough for a few doses rather than a full bag. Power consumption is not stated.

A 50 g container suits a single dose workflow: weigh the beans for one brew, tip them in and grind the lot, so nothing sits exposed in a hopper between uses.

Against the Fellow Ode and OutIn Fino

The Fellow Ode uses larger 64 mm flat burrs with auto stop, aimed squarely at filter. The OutIn Fino is portable, battery powered and has 28 settings with a 25 g hopper. The G5 sits between them: a compact mains grinder with a wide range including espresso.

Verdict

Buy the HiBREW G5 if you single dose, want a small metal grinder with espresso capability and like the option of slower grinding. If filter is your focus and you want flat burrs, the Fellow Ode is the stronger choice, while the OutIn Fino suits travel and camping better.
