Our take
Dual-range grinding
Baratza describes the espresso settings as high resolution, meaning smaller steps in the fine range where they matter most. The coarse range then covers filter and French press. The adjustment system is metal, which Baratza says is built for daily use.
This split makes the ESP a flexible single grinder for a kitchen that makes both espresso and other brew styles.
Simple operation
Grinding starts with a press of the pulse button, useful when grinding straight into a portafilter, or can be left running with the on/off knob. There is no timer or digital dosing, so you will want scales if consistency matters.
The pulse button also helps with dosing by feel: short bursts let you top up a portafilter or dosing cup without overshooting by much, which is handy until you settle on a routine.
Burrs and maintenance
The grinder uses 40 mm conical steel burrs with a quick-release design, which makes them easier to remove for cleaning. Baratza notes safety certification.
Specs and what is missing
Power is 70 watts and weight is 2.6 kg, the lightest grinder in this group. The listing does not give hopper capacity, retention figures or dimensions, so check those details before buying if space or single dosing matter to you.
Because the motor is modest in power, expect grinding for a double shot to take a little longer than on higher wattage grinders such as the Sette 270, though Baratza does not quote a grind speed.
Against the Sette 30 and Sette 270
The Baratza Sette 30 offers 30 clear steps and timed dosing for espresso. The Sette 270 adds a stepless micro ring and dosing to a tenth of a second, with a 300 g hopper. The Encore ESP is the most straightforward of the three and the one to choose if you also brew filter regularly.
Verdict
Buy the Baratza Encore ESP if you are new to espresso, want a simple grinder and also need a coarse range for filter or French press. If you want timed dosing, the Baratza Sette 30 is the next step, and if very fine adjustment matters, the Sette 270 is the better choice.
