The De'Longhi Dedica Maestro Plus (EC950.M) is for someone who wants latte art style milk without learning to steam by hand, in a slim manual espresso machine. Its Auto LatteArt function froths milk automatically at a chosen temperature and texture, and three coffee infusion temperatures help match the brew to the beans.

Our take

Auto LatteArt

You choose from three milk temperatures (60, 65 or 70°C) and three textures (LatteArt microfoam, fine or dense). The wand then froths automatically. That makes it easy to get the right foam for a flat white one day and a cappuccino the next, and to drink at a temperature you prefer.

The listing does not explain whether a manual steaming mode is also available.

Brewing temperature and baskets

Active temperature control offers three infusion profiles from 92 to 96°C, which helps when switching between darker and lighter roasts. The stainless steel portafilter holds up to 20 g and uses single wall baskets, which give more control but also need a good grinder and correct tamping, unlike the double wall baskets on the De'Longhi Classic EM450.

The pump is rated at 15 bar.

Controls and design

A five function control panel keeps operation simple. The Maestro Plus takes its slim design from the Dedica Style, with a sturdier body for stability. It is 19 cm wide, 45 cm deep and 32.5 cm high, and weighs 5.5 kg. The water tank holds 1.6 litres and power is 1450 watts.

What you will need

There is no grinder, and the listing marks the coffee input as ground coffee. With single wall baskets, pre-ground supermarket coffee may not give the best results, so a suitable espresso grinder is worth budgeting for. Heat-up time is not stated.

Against the Bambino Plus and Classic EM450

The Sage Bambino Plus offers a 3 second heat-up, PID and an automatic wand with adjustable temperature and texture in a 19.5 cm body. The De'Longhi Classic EM450 uses double wall baskets that are more forgiving for beginners, with a manual Cappuccino System. The Maestro Plus sits between them with automatic milk and temperature profiles.

Verdict

Buy the Dedica Maestro Plus if you want automatic milk texturing with precise temperature and texture choices in a narrow machine, and you have a good grinder. If speed of heat-up matters, the Sage Bambino Plus is the rival to beat, and if you want forgiving double wall baskets, the De'Longhi Classic EM450 is easier for a first machine.
