The Sage Oracle Jet is for people who want true portafilter espresso but do not want to master grinding, dosing and tamping themselves. It automates all three and textures milk too, so Sage claims you can go from beans to a latte in under a minute, while still using a 58 mm professional-size portafilter.

Our take

What gets automated

The integrated grinder grinds, doses and tamps for you, filling the 58 mm stainless steel portafilter with a 22 g dose. You then lock it into the group and brew. This keeps the ritual of a portafilter machine while removing the steps where most beginners go wrong, such as uneven tamping or an inconsistent dose.

Shot control can be volumetric or timed, set via an LCD screen interface.

Auto Queue and ThermoJet

Auto Queue lets you line up the next step, for example steaming milk while the espresso brews, so the machine moves on automatically. ThermoJet heating is described as fast and energy efficient with precise temperature control. Sage does not quote a heat-up time for this model in the listing.

Milk texturing

The milk wand offers both automatic and manual adjustments for temperature and texture, aimed at microfoam suitable for latte art. A 480 ml milk jug is included. Being able to switch to manual means more experienced users can still steam by hand when they want to.

A Knock Box 10 is also in the box, which saves buying one separately for spent pucks.

Size and practical points

The water tank holds 2.3 litres. Amazon lists dimensions of 45.7 cm deep, 45.5 cm wide and 50.8 cm high and a weight of 12.1 kg, which suggests a large machine, though these figures may include packaging. Check Sage's own measurements before planning the space. Power is 1600 watts.

Against the Oracle Touch and Barista Touch Impress

The Sage Oracle Touch also automates grind, dose and tamp with a 22 g dose, adding a touch screen and a dedicated steam boiler for simultaneous extraction and steaming. The Barista Touch Impress has 30 grind settings, a 3 second heat-up, 14 presets and cold brew, but less automation of the puck. The Oracle Jet sits between them: high automation with ThermoJet heating and Auto Queue.

Verdict

Buy the Sage Oracle Jet if you want full portafilter espresso with grinding, dosing, tamping and milk handled for you, and a 58 mm portafilter. If you want a touch screen and a dedicated steam boiler, look at the Sage Oracle Touch, and if presets and cold brew matter more than automation, the Sage Barista Touch Impress is the better fit.
