Our take
Stepless across brew methods
Baratza says you can move smoothly between settings without clicking through steps, choosing any size for espresso, filter or cold brew. For filter drinkers, this means a recipe can be nudged slightly finer or coarser without being forced to the nearest click. For espresso, it allows small changes when dialling in.
The flip side is that there are no numbered clicks to return to, so make a note of the position you like.
Single dose and timer modes
Single Dose Mode grinds just enough beans for one cup, ideal for people who weigh beans before grinding. Timer Mode repeats a set grind time to 0.1 seconds. Having both lets you weigh beans when switching coffees and use the timer for your everyday bean.
Using both modes in one kitchen is straightforward: the timer handles the house blend while single dose takes care of the occasional bag of something different.
Anti-static and cleaning
Anti-static technology is said to stop grounds clinging inside the grinder or spreading onto the worktop. The listing also mentions a flow-control disk. The 40 mm conical burrs are quick release, which makes cleaning simpler.
Build and capacity
The housing is anodised cast zinc and ABS. The hopper holds 300 g. Power is 70 watts, weight is 3.08 kg and Baratza gives a 12 month warranty. Dimensions are not stated.
At 70 watts the motor is modest, so do not expect it to match high-torque grinders on speed, though Baratza does not give a grind rate.
Against the Fellow Ode and Virtuoso+
The Fellow Ode uses 64 mm flat burrs with auto stop and an 80 g single dose hopper, focused on filter. The Baratza Virtuoso+ has an M2 conical burr and a timer, but the listing does not state its adjustment range or hopper size. The Encore ESP Pro is the most flexible of the three across brew styles.
Verdict
Buy the Baratza Encore ESP Pro if you brew espresso and filter and want stepless control with both single dose and timer modes. If you only brew filter and want flat burrs, the Fellow Ode is the specialist pick, and if you prefer a timer with lights on the grounds bin, the Baratza Virtuoso+ is the alternative.
