Our take
Pre-brewing
Automatic pre-brewing introduces a few seconds of pause between the first shower of hot water and the main brew. Gaggia says this gives a fuller body and more intense taste. It is a simple version of pre-infusion, which helps the coffee settle before full pressure is applied.
Articulated pannarello wand
A pannarello wand draws in air to help create foam, making it more forgiving than a plain steam wand. Gaggia's articulated design gives a wider range of motion, and the improved system is said to deliver a more stable steam jet. That helps when you are learning to froth for cappuccinos and lattes.
The trade-off is that pannarello foam is usually airier and less suited to fine latte art than milk steamed with a plain tip.
Size, tank and power
This is a compact machine: 25.5 cm deep, 19.9 cm wide and 30 cm high, weighing 3.7 kg. The water tank holds 1.2 litres, so you will refill often if you make several drinks. Power is 1900 watts and the pump is listed at 15 bar. It uses ground coffee only.
The low weight and narrow width make it a good fit for a small flat, a caravan kitchen or a home office where space is at a premium.
What the listing leaves out
The portafilter size, basket type, heating system and temperature control are not stated. The Gaggia range comparison and espresso guides also mark these as not stated. If you plan to use fresh-ground beans with a specific grinder, check the basket type before ordering.
Against the Bambino Plus and Classic EM450
The Sage Bambino Plus offers a 54 mm portafilter, ThermoJet with PID and an automatic milk wand, in a similarly slim body. The De'Longhi Classic EM450 has double wall baskets, a thermoblock, a pressure gauge and a larger 1.7 litre tank. The Gaggia appeals on its Italian manufacture and easy pannarello.
Verdict
Buy the Gaggia Espresso Deluxe if you want a compact, Italian-made manual machine with pre-brewing and an easy-to-use pannarello wand. If you want automatic milk and fast heating, the Sage Bambino Plus is the stronger choice, and if a pressure gauge and bigger tank appeal, the De'Longhi Classic EM450 is the alternative.
